Is Out-Of-Hospital Birth right for me and my family?

Home birth offers the comfort of being in your own space, as well as the freedom to have a birth experience that aligns with you and your family's values. My expertise lies in supporting gentle, unmedicated births while respecting your autonomy and empowering you to make informed decisions. The most important factor in deciding if home birth is right for you is ensuring you have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy that is likely to result in a safe, routine birth. From our first appointment, I will thoroughly assess your health and your pregnancy to determine if home birth is a reasonable option for you. Throughout your pregnancy, I will continue to evaluate your progress to ensure you remain a good candidate for home birth. While I am trained and equipped to handle many routine birth complications, safety is my highest priority. If necessary, I will refer you to a higher level of care to ensure you and your baby’s well-being. Ultimately, I am here to support you in making the best decision for your birth, with safety and your unique needs at the forefront of everything I do.

Do you attend births for families that have more complex pregnancies, such as Twins, VBAC’s, or Breech?

I believe every family deserves exceptional care, no matter the complexity of their birth plan. With formal training and experience in out-of-hospital births, I can support births that involve complexities such as VBAC, twins, or breech presentation. As a dedicated professional, my goal is to provide personalized support, education, and guidance throughout your entire pregnancy and birth journey. With informed consent, I collaborate closely with your chosen care providers (if indicated) and we assemble a birth team tailored to your specific needs, ensuring that your birth experience is safe, empowering, and aligns with your family’s birth goals.

Do you provide full care for me and my baby?

For healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies and births, I am proud to offer full-spectrum care for both you and your newborn. Prenatally, I will provide continuous, personalized support to ensure you feel safe and informed. This care includes routine blood work, standard laboratory testing, genetic testing, and ordering diagnostic ultrasounds (including the anatomy scan). I provide full prenatal assessments with plenty of time to address any concerns, talk about your upcoming birth, and get to know each other better. After your baby is born, I will continue to provide comprehensive care that includes routine postpartum care, well-baby visits up to 6-weeks old, access to standard medications, and neonatal testing- including the newborn metabolic screening, hearing screening, CCHD screening, as well as birth certificate filing through Michigan’s VERA system.

How were you trained?

I graduated from a MEAC accredited college degree program that specializes in the science of midwifery. I, also, completed 6-years of clinical training in out-of-hospital birth settings. After this process, I passed the required national exam and completed the requirements for licensure with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). In addition, I became a Licensed Midwife (LM) within the state. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs alongside the Michigan Board of Licensed Midwifery requires CPMs to obtain a state license to practice midwifery, legally.

What is your fee for midwifery services, and do you accept insurance?

The cost of a hospital birth in Michigan can range from $11,000-$30,000 on average. In comparison, homebirth is typically 1/3 to 1/6 of that cost. While homebirth care is often not covered by insurance, it’s important to note that many homebirth services still cost less than the average insurance deductible. As of now, I am not in-network with any insurance companies, but my goal is to change that. By the end of 2025, I am working towards becoming in-network with a few insurance companies—either partially or fully. I do, however, accept payments through HSA/FSA accounts.

My mission is to make midwifery care accessible to all families, regardless of their socioeconomic status. To help achieve this, I operate on a sliding scale for private pay families, which ranges from $4,500 to $5,500. Families that receive Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, Section 8, or any other government assistance program automatically qualify for the community midwifery care fee of $4,000. I also offer this same fee to solo parents and teen parents. The sliding scale system allows me to continue providing sustainable care while ensuring that families with lower incomes have access to proper, compassionate midwifery care.

What is included in the midwifery care fee?

  • All prenatal visits according to standard schedule (up to 14 visits if in care from first trimester)

  • Labor, birth and immediate postpartum care for you and your baby

  • Postpartum care according to standard schedule for you and your baby

    • 1 visit at approximately 24-36 hours after birth

    • 1 visit at 3-days

    • 1 visit at 1-week

    • 1 lactation visit within first week (if indicated)

    • 1 visit at 2-weeks

    • 1 visit at 4-weeks (if indicated)

    • 1 visit at 6-weeks

  • Standard medical equipment, supplies, and staffing aside from exceptions below

 The fee does NOT include:

  • Any referred specialist services

  • Prescribed medications

  • Lab work and testing fees

  • Ultrasound fees

  • Home birth kit with single use items

  • Basic supplies for home birth including towels, bedding, etc.

  • Expenses related to emergency care, transportation and hospital services (if indicated)

  • Circumcision, vaccinations, and other procedures that are outside of the midwifery scope of practice. Referrals will be provided when needed and records will be sent to pediatricians/other care providers.

What happens in the event of a transfer of care or hospital transfer?

Transfer of Care:

If you discontinue care for any reason, you will be financially responsible for the care that you have received. No refunds are given after 36 weeks. If transport to a hospital becomes necessary for any reason during labor or after the birth, your total fee remains the same.

Hospital Transfers:

My transfer rate typically ranges from 9-10%, which is consistent with other midwifery practices in the area. Homebirth midwives tend to have lower transfer rates because we typically work with low-risk, healthy individuals. While I have great faith in the body's ability to give birth, I also acknowledge that birth can be unpredictable. In some situations, a transfer may be necessary for the safety and well-being of you and your baby. I always ensure that you are well-informed about what a transfer would look like in the event it's needed, and we discuss these plans, well in advance, to make sure everyone feels prepared.

There are two types of transfers: non-emergent and emergent.

  • Non-Emergent Transfers: These can be facilitated by car to a hospital of your choice, and I will be there to guide you through the process every step of the way.

  • Emergent Transfers: In these cases, an ambulance will transport you to the nearest hospital. I will stay with you throughout the process to ensure your care is as smooth and seamless as possible.

In both cases, I will coordinate directly with the hospital to ensure they understand your situation. I generally fax over your records, triage with you to explain your care needs, and remain by your side as your advocate and support system until it is appropriate to leave. Once care is transferred, the hospital team will take over as your primary care provider, but I will continue to support you and ensure that you feel safe, well-supported, and your needs are met. After discharge from the hospital, we will resume postpartum care per usual.

During This Journey

“The most extraordinary thing about parenthood is finding a piece of yourself that is separate, and apart, that all at the same time you could never live without.”

My Services Are…

  • Personalized

We will have 1-hour appointments monthly until week 28, biweekly until week 36, then weekly until your baby is born. This extended time that we spend together gives us the opportunity to really get to know each other and understand exactly what you need for YOUR birth experience. By the time our care is done, we are a little family.

  • Targeted

Every family has different needs throughout the childbearing year. Sometimes personal circumstances change the plan that you envisioned. My care is targeted to meeting you and your family right where you are. This is accomplished by providing evidence-based information, ensuring that you are informed, and making sure you have access to as many resources as possible to achieve your birth goals.

  • Safe

As a BIPOC that has experienced my own (personal) birth experiences in the hospital and OOH setting, I understand what Black and Brown families are facing in the mainstream healthcare system. I also understand that individuals with diverse family backgrounds are often not receiving optimal care due to provider biases. My main goal is to provide safe and culturally appropriate care from preconception through the postpartum period.
